What is a moped?

In the Netherlands, a moped (bromfiets or snorfiets) is a small motorized vehicle designed for short-distance travel. It typically has:

  • A maximum speed of 45 km/h

  • A license plate

  • A required helmet (for both bromfiets and snorfiets)

  • Road use approval under Dutch law

Whether it’s a traditional petrol scooter or an electric moped, it falls under the same legal insurance requirements. You must insure your moped with at least WA coverage (liability), and additional protection like theft, fire, or accidental damage is optional but strongly recommended.

What does moped insurance cover?

Moped insurance usually includes these coverage levels:

Coverage LevelWhat’s Covered
WARequired by law. Covers damage you cause to others (liability).

All RiskFull coverage, including accidental damage to your own moped.

Other optional benefits include:

  • ✅ Helmets and accessories

  • ✅ Legal assistance

  • ✅ Roadside help

  • ✅ Travel coverage in the EU
